Optum, a division of UnitedHealthcare, is set to expand its patient care options across the U.S. with the recently announced agreement to acquire DaVita Medical Group. Optum's medical care delivery system currently includes a network of surgical centers, urgent care centers and a HouseCall program. DaVita Medical Group will add 300 medical clinics and 6 surgical centers concentrated in Florida, California, Colorado, Washington, Nevada and New Mexico to the system.
DaVita is best-known for its nationwide network of 2,470 outpatient dialysis centers. This unit is not part of the UnitedHealth/Optum $4.9 billion deal which is subject to regulatory approvals. >>Read more

Steady Growth...is the trend for urgent care centers in the US - based on the results from the 2012 Urgent Care Benchmarking Study. Approximate growth from 2008-2010 was 300 centers per year. In 2011, the growth rate nearly doubled and 80% of urgent care centers reported an increase in patient visits. The study will soon be released by the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA), the industry arm providing leadership, education and resources for its members.

U.S. HealthWorks Medical Group, the largest independent
operator of occupational health & urgent care centers, was acquired by
Dignity Health, formerly Catholic Healthcare West.
U.S. HealthWorks which operates 172 centers in 16 states was previously a portfolio company of
Altaris Capital Partners and Three Arch
Partners. It will be
a wholly owned for-profit unit of Dignity.
As the nation’s fifth largest hospital chain, the acquisition
jumpstarts Dignity’s efforts to extend its reach beyond California, Arizona and
Nevada to a national level.
